"Working at Action Language is so rewarding, both personally and professionally. I get to work with wonderful, eager learners, who make coming to 'work' a real pleasure. As someone with an interest in teaching, but no teaching qualifications, I felt extremely nervous about volunteering, but both staff and students have made me feel so welcome. Attending Action Language classes is something I always look forward to, and the fulfilling nature of the role makes the sessions a real joy to attend. I love my job. I feel lucky to be able to say that, and very privileged to be part of such a great organisation!"

We currently have the following volunteer positions available.

Action Housing started in Feb 06 when one Iranian man was destitute and in desperate need of accommodation. Our response to his need and the injustice of this situation grew into this project that has housed 22 of the most vulnerable asylum seekers in Newcastle in our first three years.

PA/administrator
– required to assist with the general running of the office and fundraising. No previous experience necessary however, you must be available for approximately 6 hours a week, have good communication skills (both verbal and written) and be proficient in most Microsoft Office programmes.

ESOL teachers - qualified and experienced teachers (CELTA or equivalent) required to help us develop our work by committing to two hours per week teaching time. Teachers need to share our belief in inclusion and the importance of developing the individual and be willing to take responsibility for presenting lessons.

ESOL teaching assistants/helpers - The Teaching Assistant role is to support our qualified English teachers in the delivery of classes. We aim to have one teaching assistant to three/four learners. Under the direction and guidance of our teachers, you would work alongside our learners, helping them to understand and cope with the language teaching as well as encouraging them to join in with the more social aspects of our lessons. Previous experience is not necessary as the teachers leading the classes will take responsibility for teaching materials and organisation.

All the above posts require the applicants to complete an application form, voluntary disclosure, period of observation, interview, supply two references and be sympathetic to our Christian Ethos. The Caseworker/Advocate post requires a CRB check to be made for any successfully recruited volunteer.
